EXPERIMENT 2 : TABLET FRIABILITY

OBJECTIVE
1.To determine the friability of tablets to withstand with damaged.

INTRODUCTION
Tablet Friability is the evaluation the ability of tablets to withstand abrasion, packaging, handling and shipping. It can also be defined as the phenomenon whereby tablet surfaces are damaged and /or show evidence of lamination or breakage when subjected to mechanical shock or attrition.Tablets must be able to withstand mechanical stresses during their manufacturing, distribution and handling by the end-user. Both friability and hardness measure the mechanical integrity of tablets.
Tablets are constantly subjected to mechanical shocks and aberration to manufacturing, packing and transportation process. Such stress can lead to capping, aberration areve breakage of tablets. It is therefore important that the tablet is formulated to withstand such stress. In order to monitor the resistance of tablets to such stress and to decide on their suitability for further processing such as coating, tablets are routinely subjected to friability test.

MATERIALS AND APPARATUS
Materials : 10 tablets
Apparatus : Friability tester machine, weighing boat

PROCEDURES
1.Select 10 tablets and weighed.
2.All the tablets are put into the drum of the tablet aberration and friability. The rate of rotation is set to 100 rpm time to 10 minutes and start the operation.
3.At the end of the operation, remove all the tablets and ensure freedom from dust or powder. The tablets are reweighed and determine the percentage loss of weigh.
Tablets used in this experiment are Paralgin tablet 500mg.

Condition
Total weight of 10 tablets(g)
Before undergoing friability test
6.7692
After undergoing friability test
6.7674

The percentage loss of weight = [(0.0018) / (6.7692)] x 100%
                                                     0.027%

DISCUSSION
Friability is the tendency for a tablet to chip, crumble or break following compression. This tendency is normally confined to uncoated tablets and surfaces during handling or subsequent storage. It can be caused by a number of factors including poor tablet design (too sharp edges), low moisture content and insufficient binder. For obvious reasons, tablets need to be hard enough such that they do not break up in the bottle but friable enough that they disintegrate in the gastrointestinal tract.
Friability is defined as the percentage of weight loss by tablets due to mechanical action during the test. Tablets are weighing before and after testing and friability are expressed as a percentage loss on pre test tablet weight. Friability refers the ability of the compressed tablets to avoid fracture and breaking during transport. Friability is closely related to tablet hardness .It  is designed to withstand aberration in packing, handling and shipping. Friability is usually measured by the use of Roche fibrilatoror tumbler test.
A number of tablets are weighed and placed in the apparatus where they are exposed to rolling and repeated shocks as they fall 6 inches in each turn within the apparatus. After that the tablets are weighed and the weight compared with initial weight. The loss due to abrasion is measure of tablet friability. The value is expressed in percentage. Minimum weight loss of the tablet should not be more 1%. There should not be any broken tablet. The weight loss of Paralgin tablet is less than 1% which mean that the tablets are strong and hard enough to withstand from breaking easily during the packing, handling and also shipping.
Normally, when capping occurs, friability values are not calculated. A thick tablet may have less tendency to cap whereas thin tablets of large diameter often show extensive capping, thus indicating that tablets with greater thickness have reduced internal stress.
Effervescent tablets and chewable tablets may have different specifications as far as friability is concerned. In the case of hygroscopic tablets, an appropriate humidity-controlled environment is required for testing

CONCLUSION
1.The weight loss of Paralgin tablet is 0.027% which mean that the tablets are strong and hard enough to withstand from breaking easily during the packing, handling and also shipping.
